Liderar o Gerenciar

Una vez, haciéndolas de papá, consideraba que uno de mis hijos estaba listo para ciertas labores domésticas.  Había invertido bastante tiempo en el almuerzo y procuraba que el menor se fuera haciendo cargo de ciertas cosas, como lavar su plato y su vaso al menos. Me gustaría contarles que ante mi propuesta saltó de alegría y que dijo: “Papi, yo te ayudo, lavo también el tuyo, no te preocupes…”  Bueno, la verdad fue un poco distinto. Al principio quise enseñarle los beneficios que eso podía tener para él, y pronto me di cuenta que no veía beneficio alguno en mis planteamientos, y por supuesto, procuré seguir intentando.

Debo confesar que al poco tiempo ya mi disposición constructiva se me empezó a agotar,  al rato de varios intentos fallidos sólo fue posible que David acudiera al fregadero con una instrucción directa.  David: Lavá tu plato..!

Sí claro; lo logré, pero las ganas con las que mi hijo atendió la labor no son dignas de resaltar. Descubrí que una cosa es que yo quiera que mi hijo ayude en la cocina, y otra es que yo logre que mi hijo quiera ayudar en la cocina. Gerenciar es cuando yo hago que las cosas se hagan. Liderar es diferente, liderar es lograr que el otro quiera hacer las cosas. Son espacios que convergen pero que provienen de lugares muy distintos.

En la universidad y en el  mundo empresarial nos entrenan para gerenciar, y no necesariamente para liderar.   Ser gerente es algo relativamente resuelto; sin que lo considere sencillo, las Escuelas de Negocios son especialistas y hacen un muy buen trabajo en la mayoría de los casos.

El desafío del liderazgo es que traspasa el mundo Cartesiano, donde la existencia se basa en nuestra capacidad de pensar , y los intentos que tenemos para formar el liderazgo han venido desde el pensamiento, de ahí la confusión entre gerenciar y liderar.  La Gerencia es necesaria y viene desde la habilidad racional que tenemos, pero el Liderazgo no está en el mundo de lo concreto, está en el mundo de lo abstracto, donde converge lo que soy y lo que siento,  espacios donde estamos generalmente ciegos, sin capacidad de resolverlo  porque no sabemos distinguirlo.

El desafío organizacional es enseñar a SER a sus líderes, porque el liderazgo es una forma de SER que no es conocimiento per se, y por lo tanto no se puede enseñar como se enseña a administrar el tiempo, el dinero o los recursos, porque lo que hay que aprender no es para obtener conocimiento, ahí está la clave, proviene de un sitio profundamente diferente y profundamente ajeno para muchos.

Gerenciar es aprender a de alguna manera a HACER auque sea a través de otros. Liderar es SER en medio de las cosas que se hacen.

Maturana decía: » Sólo es posible intervenir, aquello que nos es posible distinguir», y muchas veces no logramos distinguir el impacto que el liderazgo tiene en los resultados empresariales. El Liderazgo es una forma de transformar la empresa, de unirla y de fortalecer los resultados.

  3. Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it
    to my 4 year old daughter and said «You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.» She placed the
    shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
